Croatian ex -Prime Minister Ivo Sanader was arrested in Salzburg, Austria at 3.50 pm on Friday.
Croatian police have issued an international arrest warrant for Ivo Sanader, now a lawmaker, who left the country on Thursday December 9th, a few hours before it became clear that prosecutors wanted him detained on corruption charges. According to WikiLeaks, there are several ongoing corruption cases targeting Sanader and that at least one case could lead to his indictment. Some say he faces up to 10 years in prison.
Before arrest, he was last seen entering Slovenia, but many people believed he procedeed to Austria, where he owns a company.
The arrest warrant for Sanader was sent to Interpol, and 188 of its member countries were searching for him.
That's when Sanader probably decided to come back home and face charges.
On Friday Sanader sent to Croatian news agency Hina a text message saying he was returning to Croatia in the afternoon and would respond to the call from Croatian institutions. His friend Jerko Rosin, also heard from him and said that he was on a foreign business trip and would cut it short to return home.
Sanader abruptly quit as prime minister on July 1, 2009, at the middle of his second term, saying only that he decided to leave politics. A year later he said that the main reason for that had been bad relations with neighbouring Slovenia, which was blocking Croatia's entry into the European Union.
