Milijuni šijita obilježili su ovog tjedna blagdan Ašure, godišnjicu smrti Huseina, jednoga od unuka proroka Muhameda.

Ašura je državni praznik u Afganistanu, Iranu, Iraku, Libanonu, Bahreinu i Pakistanu. Ulice šijitskih gradova bile su ispunjene vjernicima, a na njima su snimljeni uznemirujući prizori. Naime, na fotografijama su zabilježeni šokantni obredi i samoozljeđivanja u kojima ponekad sudjeluju i mala djeca.

Mnogi su se vjernici ranije ovog tjedna uputili u središnji irački grad Karbalu gdje se nalazi njegov grob i hram. Koračali su kroz grad udarajući se lancima po leđima i prsima i jecajući dok krv prekriva njihova tijela i lica. Ostali se udaraju u prsa u konstantnom ritmu.

Ašura pada na deseti dan Muharama, prvog mjeseca islamskog Mjesečeva kalendara. Muslimani obilježavaju spomen na dan kad je Mojsije spašen od Egipćana. Za muslimane šijite, dan ima posebnu važnost.

Šijiti tada obilježavaju Huseinovu smrt u bitki kod Karbale 680. godine. Husein je bio unuk proroka Muhameda i sin Alija, osnivača šijitizma.

Festival je bio zabranjen u Iraku godinama pod svrgnutim predsjednikom Sadamom Huseinom.
