KIJEV - Više od tisuću vatrogasaca raspoređeno je radi gašenja požara u zabranjenoj zoni oko Černobila u nedjelju, na 34. godišnjicu nuklearne katastrofe.

Požari u uglavnom nenaseljenoj zoni i u drugim dijelovima Ukrajine haraju proteklih tjedana zbog snažnih vjetrova i neuobičajene suše nakon zime u kojoj gotovo da nije bilo snijega.

Vatrogasci, koji su ondje već tri tjedna, u nedjelju se bave dvama žarištima od gorućih stabala i grmlja, priopćila je civilna zaštita.

Zaštitari okoliša strahuju da bi požar mogao podići radioaktivni pepeo koji bi nošen vjetrom mogao stići do glavnog grada Kijeva, stotinjak kilometara južno od uništene černobilske nuklearke.

Radijacija u Kijevu je stabilna i ne prelazi granične vrijednosti, objavila je civilna zaštita, a aktivist Egor Firsov upozorio je ranije ovaj mjesec da je radijacija u černobilskoj zoni 16 puta viša od dopuštene.

Eksplozija u nuklearnom reaktoru u Černobilu 1986. godine smatra se najgorom nuklearnom katastrofom u povijesti.

Deseci ljudi, osobito vatrogasci i medicinsko osoblje, umrli su od izravnih posljedica nesreće.

"Na ovaj dan u mislima smo s herojima koji su spasili budućnost od opasne radijacije", rekao je predsjednik Volodimir Zelenskij u priopćenju.

Izrazio je "duboko poštovanje" prema vatrogascima i ostalima koji se trude "zaštititi to područje od novih prirodnih katastrofa".
